Guest author, Harper Reid, gives her top choices for tropical holidays.
White beaches, crystal-clear waters, and palm trees swaying in the wind – what’s better than a holiday in the tropics? Because they promise loads of rest and relaxation, tropical vacations are a great choice for senior travellers. So, which tropical destination should you head to on your next break? I’ve compiled below my choice of the six best spots.
1. Great Barrier Reef, Australia
Jet your way to Queensland, Australia and find out what all the fuss about the Great Barrier Reef is about. There’s a reason this spot is World-Heritage accredited!
Whether you’re an able, scuba-loving adventurer, or you’d prefer to flick through a magazine on the beach, the Great Barrier Reef and its surrounds are sure to please every class of senior.
2. Caribbean
When you think of the tropics, it’s highly likely that your mind conjures the image of a Caribbean beach. There’s no doubt that the Caribbean is the big daddy of tropical holiday destinations, especially given the sheer selection of islands you have to choose from.
Jet to Barbados for cocktails, reggae, and the whitest sands you’ll see, or to the Bahamas to check out the famous pink sand beach. Alternatively, the French-style St Martin may be more up your alley (it has the best tapas around and even a spot for nude bathing, if you’re so inclined). And don’t forget Jamaica, either, for fantastic live music and sublime sunsets.
3. Hawaii
Want to land on American territory without sacrificing an authentic island experience? Then you should pop Hawaii at the top of your list. The state of Hawaii contains historical and cultural sites like Pearl Harbour, and has an excellent selection of top-quality golf courses.
You’ll also have your pick of excellent driving tours if you want to venture beyond your resort. Or you might eschew a sight-seeing holiday in favour of a condo right on the beach, only a few handy steps from the bar when your glass gets empty – an ideal holiday!
4. Thailand
Thailand isn’t just for young partiers. This Southeast Asian country offers some of the most beautiful beaches in the world – hence why I haven’t narrowed it down to just one island! From Ko Phi Phi Leh to Koh Samui and Phuket, there’s more than one coastal paradise to be found in Thailand.
For seniors seeking an all-in cultural holiday, Thailand can’t be beaten. The people are lovely, the food is exquisite, and the tourist experience is second-to-none.
5. Miami, USA
Looking for a coastal city with a year-round vacation ambience? Then Miami is hard to beat!
This Floridian paradise offers the best of both worlds: an Art Deco city that’s great for leisurely shopping and brunching, and the glorious sun and sea breeze you’d expect from the most tropical of island destinations. In addition, Miami has some of the best seafood restaurants in the world, so if you’re keen on your crayfish, there’s no better place.
6. Samoa
The island nation of Samoa is a senior traveller’s dream. Home to the large islands of Upolu and Savai’i as well as to less-populated atolls, Samoa offers no shortage of picturesque islands for you to explore during your time there.
Despite its growing reputation as the tropical destination in the South Pacific (if not the Southern Hemisphere), Samoa’s stunning natural beauty has a wildness to it which will truly give you that edge-of-the-world feeling.
Samoa’s scenic beauty goes hand-in-hand with all the services and amenities you’ll need to enjoy your holiday. Samoa has some of the best spas in the South Pacific, and offers a bevy of enjoyable boat tours that will allow you to explore its islands with ease.
