COUNTRY

Hanover (Hannover in German), the most northerly of our Top Ten German Cities, is often overlooked by tourists. Certainly its Old Town is limited in size having been only partly rebuilt after World War II, but its gardens are some of the finest in Germany and its central lake, the Maschsee, adds a great backdrop when exploring the city.

Dresden has risen from the ashes and is now resplendent with fine historic buildings, like the Frauenkirche Church and the Zwinger Palace, with its impressive exhibitions, and pleasant walks along the banks of the Elbe.

Leipzig is rightly known as the City of Music hence on our first visit to this city, we decided to follow the Music Trail visiting along the way the Neues Gewandhaus Concert Hall, St Nicholas Church, the Alte Börse, the Marktplatz, St Thomas Church and Kaffeehaus Riquet. Just outside the city, we visited to Monument to the Battle of the Nations.

Passau is the smallest of our Top Ten German Cities, but it has much to offer senior travellers and well deserves its inclusion in our top ten list.
